The New York Times reports, “according to data from the National Ski Areas Association, 87.5 percent of skiers over the 2020-2021 season were white. Black skiers made up 1.5 percent of the group, and Native Americans, 0.7 percent.” Although the outdoors seemingly appears to be open to everyone, it isn’t as simple as that. The lack of accessibility and representation of major groups creates an appearance that recreational and outdoor activities aren’t as inclusive as marketing, especially apparel marketing, may make it seem.

This collection was inspired by the small percentage of snow sport participants that are BIPOC and other groups not seen in these statistics. My goal in creating this collection is to create a presence and colorful collection to take up space, especially in areas such as skiing or snowboarding where BIPOC folks hold a small stake.
I created this collection using second hand items, such as the beads, and materials kids might use such as glue and markers. I think as kids there is a sense of wonder of trying new things that can come in handy when it comes to trying new things in outdoor spaces.
